This is such a fun memory. The story behind the picture is just as good as the photo.

I had taken the boys to Marvel Live in 2015 and they loved it! They had so much fun, and I loved watching them experience it. I will even admit it really was a cool show, especially with all the amazing special effects.

It was also the first time I had intentionally done something on this scale with them by myself. It was just the three of us. I relied so heavily on my parents after Dave died. Not only were they a huge help, but it helped me not feel the loss of Dave so sharply. We were now a family of three and it was so painfully obvious to me that someone was missing when we did something special like this. But I was determined to do it anyway, and we had a blast!

Once Jim and I got married with did many things as a family, but Jim did not necessarily do things just him and the boys. When I saw that Marvel LIVE was coming back to Albany, I suggested Jim surprise the boys by taking them. The big night came, and Jim told the boys that he was taking them to camp for the night. They were NOT happy - especially when they realized that I was not going! They packed bags full of the necessary things they’d need, and Caleb insisted on taking his wheelchair charger.

When Jim saw Zach starting to pack up his iPad, he told him no electronics. He didn’t want to leave any valuables in the van, knowing it would be parked in a downtown parking garage at night.  Zach gave him big time attitude! He said, “I’ll go to camp but I will not like it.” I waved goodbye to the three of them with a big smile on my face.

The boys knew Jim well enough by now to know that they were probably not going to camp, especially when Jim took them out to dinner. Then Caleb realized that Jim had an address plugged into the van’s GPS. When they got to downtown Albany, the boys definitely knew something was up. Jim still laughs when he talks about what Zach did next. When Zach saw the huge Marvel sign, he went running into the Times Union Center - and straight into the glass doors!

Jim said the boys, but especially Zach, did not stop talking the entire evening. Throughout the whole show Zach kept turning to him and saying, “Jim, watch this! You’re going to love this!”

I think all three of these guys had a fun night and made some good memories. This was definitely a successful father/son adventure.

Scrapbooking Tips

I had asked Jim to get an overpriced souvenir photo taken so I would have something to scrapbook, and I loved that he got in the picture with the boys. One reason I like to use these photos in my scrapbooks is they usually have a name, date and location printed right on it.

I had just learned how to make a sunburst design and had a brand-new sketch to inspire me. I thought it would make the perfect backdrop for a superhero photo. I used some superhero pattern paper from Miss Kate Cuttables. I loved the colors and thought a black backdrop would set off the photo nicely. I will admit it took me a couple tries to cut my paper correctly. There’s a great Allison Davis YouTube Sunburst Design Tutorial if you want to learn this technique.

I did embellish it with some stickers that were in an Echo Park Mini pack. “Calling All Superheroes” was the perfect sticker for my title. I was really pleased with the finished look and was proud when it was published in the summer 2023 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine.
